Rookie question - shorted stocks
May 05, 2011 05:19AM
I'm new to this and accidentally sorted a whole bunch stocks rather than buying them.

Can I sell the shorted stock to get my monoey back or do I have to wait until the stock option finishes (US elections).

Cheers

Docco

If you go in and buy stocks then that will get rid of the shorted stocks, essentially shorted stocks are negative stocks so if you buy some you can get back up to 0. Hope this helps

Thanks Dave. Okay another question on Shorted stocks, so do I have to buy them back to make a return? Or once I have shorted stocks can I leave them and I will automatically make the profit?

Hi Docco, you can leave them until the stocks close and you will automatically be paid whatever profit you've made.

If you don't want to wait until the stocks close, and you think you've made enough profit (difference between the price you paid when you shorted them, and the price they are being sold for now) you can buy the stocks back (we call this 'covering your short') to make the profit right now.

Cheers mate, that's great. I think I have got the hang of it now!
