Browse Stocks presentation

What are the chances of setting up the "Browse Stocks" page so that we don't have to scroll down a country mile to see the whole page. Maybe smaller icons that we could click on for more information, or perhaps stocks could be kept in folders by topic????

It would be fairly straightforward to do an anchor link on groups of stocks, eg, the Mt Albert stocks, then you could click on a menu link and jump straight to that group of stocks.

Totally agree and while we're at it, perhaps we can use a bit more of the page width. Seems to me that we have an awful lot of wasted real estate on screen.

Oracle, they have fixed the width to 800 px, probably to stay compatible with an 800x600 screen. I agree with you and think that this is quite outdated and pointless. They should increase the width to 900, 950 or 1000 as the minimum resolution people will be using should be 1024x768.

I agree about the page width, it wouldn't change too much on the browse stocks page though. The page height each stock takes up is essentially equivalent to the height of the icon representing the stock.

Since I'm still using a tiny screened first generation Eee PC a lot of the time (though expecting to upgrade soon), I would currently be strongly against making the pages wider!

However, if we do decide to abandon support for such tiny screens (which is fair enough, there probably aren't many around by now), be careful with the next step up: 1024px horizontal res is pretty common on second generation netbooks, and some of us like to have browser tabs at the side of the page, so you probably don't want to assume much more than 950px will be available, perhaps even less.

In general it's good if you can avoid fixed-width styling where possible but instead do it in a proportional, flow-wrapped way - that way it degrades better when the window is narrow, rather than forcing a lot of horizontal scrolling.

Funfinite, I've got a EEE 1000H, and I can definitely recommend it as a netbook upgrade. thumbs up

You're absolutely right about the proportional/flow-wrapped website layouts too.

Funfinite yes you are right, and that is the reason why I fix my websites at 950px wide.

Hi all, google analytics gives us a good idea of the screen widths of our visitors.

1 1280x1024 27.99%
2 1024x768 21.69%
3 1280x800 17.07%
4 1680x1050 11.61%
5 1440x900 4.87%
6 1920x1200 3.19%
7 800x600 2.85%
8 1152x864 2.27%
9 320x396 1.31%
10 2560x1024 1.04%

We're doing s site refresh that is going to get more screen width used for those on wider resolutions. Its going to be cool.

Getting a new browse stocks page is also a priority

COOL!smileys with beer

By the way, sometimes I can only access four smilies in the text. Here's one of them.hot smiley

I was getting the problem with the forums smileys this afternoon on my work computer. After I put one smiley in, the formatting toolbar got an extra space in it, pushing the smiley insert icon onto a new line, below the Bold button.

Clicking on the icon then produced only the right side of the smiley insert box, showing only four of the smileys, as ORACLE describes above - maybe because the smiley insert icon was too close to the edge of the textarea box.
